Doge's Palace

The Doge’s Palace is a historic Venetian Gothic palace on the Piazzetta San Marco that served as the residence of the Doge and the seat of the Venetian government. It housed the city’s main institutions including courts, councils and administrative offices.

Key interiors include the ornate state rooms, the Doge’s apartments and the route to the nearby prisons via the Bridge of Sighs. The palace’s façades face the lagoon and Piazza San Marco, making it one of Venice’s principal landmarks.

The palace evolved over several centuries, with major Gothic rebuilding in the 14th and 15th centuries following earlier structures on the site; it functioned as the political centre of the Republic of Venice until the late 18th century. Parts of the palace were remodelled and restored in subsequent centuries after fires and structural changes.

Situated on the waterfront beside St Mark’s Basilica and the Piazzetta, the Doge’s Palace is in the historic core of Venice and is typically reached on foot from other central points or by vaporetto to the San Marco stop.
