Doge's Palace
Museum Venetian Gothic palace and former ducal residence
In Venice the Doge’s Palace displays Gothic state rooms, ceremonial staircases and the Bridge of Sighs; tourists tour former government chambers, prison cells, and collections of civic art while tracing the city’s political history.
The Doge’s Palace is a historic Venetian Gothic palace on the Piazzetta San Marco that served as the residence of the Doge and the seat of the Venetian government. It housed the city’s main institutions including courts, councils and administrative offices.
Key interiors include the ornate state rooms, the Doge’s apartments and the route to the nearby prisons via the Bridge of Sighs. The palace’s façades face the lagoon and Piazza San Marco, making it one of Venice’s principal landmarks.
The palace evolved over several centuries, with major Gothic rebuilding in the 14th and 15th centuries following earlier structures on the site; it functioned as the political centre of the Republic of Venice until the late 18th century. Parts of the palace were remodelled and restored in subsequent centuries after fires and structural changes.
Situated on the waterfront beside St Mark’s Basilica and the Piazzetta, the Doge’s Palace is in the historic core of Venice and is typically reached on foot from other central points or by vaporetto to the San Marco stop.
- Ticketing: Combined tickets often include access to the state rooms, the prisons and the Bridge of Sighs; some areas have timed entry to manage visitor numbers.
- Access: The palace adjoins Piazza San Marco and is best approached by foot or vaporetto to the San Marco vaporetto stop; queues can be long in summer.
What to See #
- State Rooms: Ceremonial and administrative rooms used by the Doge and the Venetian government, including the Great Council Chamber with large paintings and ornate decoration.
- Bridge of Sighs: The enclosed walkway that connects the palace to the former prisons across the Rio di Palazzo, built in the 17th century and known for its enclosed windows.
- Prisons: The prison complex accessed from the palace and visible from the Bridge of Sighs, containing narrow cells and administrative detention rooms.
- Doge's Apartments: Private apartments and chambers of the Doge decorated with frescoes and period furniture, illustrating the ceremonial life of Venice's ruler.
How to Get to Doge's Palace #
Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale) sits on Piazza San Marco in Venice. The easiest public option is vaporetto to San Zaccaria (lines 1 or 2), then a 1-3 minute walk to the palace. If arriving by car, park at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto and cross to San Marco by vaporetto or on foot.
Tips for Visiting Doge's Palace #
- Buy a timed-entry or combined ticket in advance to avoid long security queues - the palace is one of Venice's busiest indoor attractions and lines build quickly mid-morning.
- Allow time for the Secret Itineraries/official guided routes and the prison visit - they reveal rooms and passages (including the Bridge of Sighs viewpoints) that aren't visible on the regular circuit.
- Enter from the Piazzetta San Marco side and then allow a slow circuit through the mainland-facing state rooms first; many visitors rush to the exterior views and miss the richly decorated Doge's apartments.
Best Time to Visit Doge's Palace #
Visit the Doge's Palace in spring or late autumn on weekdays for smaller crowds; plan for lines in summer.
