Döda fallet
Waterfall Dry waterfall gorge created by 18th-century river diversion
Near Ragunda, Döda fallet (the ‘dead waterfall’) formed after an 18th‑century river diversion and now stands as a dry canyon; visitors walk trails and study the exposed geology.
Döda fallet, literally the ‘dead waterfall,’ is a dry former waterfall and geological site in Jämtland County, northern Sweden, created when the river’s course was diverted in 1796. The site is preserved for its unusual geomorphology and historical interest.
Visitors walk along paths that follow the former riverbed and gorge, viewing steep rock faces and sediment deposits left after the flow ceased. The site is interpreted with information panels explaining the canal works and the subsequent collapse that redirected the river.
The event that created Döda fallet occurred in the late 18th century when local canal works led to an uncontrolled breach and permanent change to the river’s course; the exposed channel remains as the main feature.
Döda fallet lies near the village of Hammarstrand in Ragunda Municipality, inland in central-northern Sweden, set within boreal forest and peatland typical of Jämtland.
