Dmanisi historic site

Dmanisi historic site is an archaeological complex in Georgia’s Kvemo Kartli region, known for some of the earliest Homo fossils found outside Africa. The site has yielded multiple hominin skulls, associated skeletal remains, and stone tools dated to about 1.8 million years ago, which are central to studies of early human dispersal.

Visitors to the site can see the excavation areas and visit a nearby museum and interpretive centre that present the finds and their scientific importance. The exposed stratigraphy and on-site displays make the site an important educational destination for paleoanthropology.

Excavations begun in the late 20th century uncovered a sequence of deposits with hominin remains and rich faunal assemblages; researchers have interpreted the material as evidence of an early population of Homo erectus/ergaster or closely related hominins occupied the area. The finds have prompted extensive study and international interest in human origins.

Geographically the site lies in southeastern Georgia in the Dmanisi area of Kvemo Kartli, within a rural landscape of rolling hills and dry river valleys, roughly within driving distance southwest of the capital, Tbilisi.
