Djurgården
Island Stockholm island park with museums and royal grounds
Stockholm’s Djurgården island hosts the Vasa Museum, Skansen open-air museum and several art institutions. Visitors combine museum visits with waterfront promenades, cafés, and seasonal events.
Djurgården is a park and island in central Stockholm known for its museums, historic attractions and recreational areas. The area has been a public leisure and cultural quarter since the 19th century and is one of Stockholm’s primary visitor destinations.
The island hosts national museums and popular attractions including the Vasa Museum, Skansen, Gröna Lund and the Nordiska Museet, all within a compact area; the preserved ship in the Vasa Museum is about 69 metres long and is among the island’s major draws. Leisure facilities, waterfront promenades and seasonal events make it a year-round destination, with the bulk of visitor activity concentrated in summer.
Originally used as royal hunting grounds and parkland, Djurgården was progressively developed for public leisure from the 19th century onward and became the location for national cultural museums and popular entertainment venues. Key institutions were founded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, establishing the island’s cultural role.
The island sits immediately east of central Stockholm and is linked by bridges, ferry services and tram lines; it is effectively part of the city and is reached in minutes from central squares and stations.
- Museum cluster: Multiple major museums and attractions are concentrated within a short walking distance, so a single day can cover two or three sites depending on time spent.
- Transport links: Regular ferries and tram lines connect the island with Stockholm city centre, making it easy to reach without a car.
What to See #
- Vasa Museum: Houses the 17th century warship salvaged from Stockholm harbour, conserved and displayed in a purpose-built museum opened in 1990; the ship is about 69 metres long and sank on its maiden voyage in 1628.
- Skansen: An open-air museum and historic park founded in 1891 that presents traditional Swedish buildings, crafts and a small zoo with Nordic domestic breeds.
- Gröna Lund: A city amusement park founded in the late 19th century located on the western shore, with rides, summer concerts and seasonal events.
- Nordiska Museet: National cultural history museum founded in 1873, with the current museum building completed in the early 20th century and collections on Nordic cultural history.
- ABBA The Museum: Museum dedicated to the pop group ABBA, opened in the 2010s and located close to other cultural attractions on the island.
