Djinguereber Mosque

Djinguereber Mosque is a major medieval mosque in Timbuktu, Mali, built in 1327 and closely associated with the city’s role as a center of Islamic learning. It is one of Timbuktu’s three historic mosques and a key example of earthen Sahel-Saharan architecture.

The mosque is noted for its large mudbrick walls, timber beams that project from the exterior, and an austere, crenellated profile. Visitors also see adjacent courtyards and former study areas that form part of Timbuktu’s medieval scholarly complex.

As a UNESCO World Heritage component, the mosque is visited for its architectural form and its place in West African Islamic history; interpretation often includes Timbuktu’s manuscript collections and the broader medieval trading and learning networks of the Sahel.

Commissioned by the architect Abu Ishaq al-Sahili under Mansa Musa in the early 14th century, the mosque served as a major congregational and teaching mosque. It has been restored repeatedly over centuries and sustained damage during conflicts in 2012, followed by international-supported conservation and repairs.

Situated in the historic core of Timbuktu in Mali’s Tombouctou Region, the mosque occupies a central location in the town’s traditional district of mosques and manuscript collections.
