How to Get to Dingxi
Dingxi is usually reached via Lanzhou-the provincial transport hub-and by regional buses or conventional trains rather than direct air service. The main airport people use is Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport (LHW); long-distance rail and coach services converge at Lanzhou West / Lanzhou Railway Station and Lanzhou's coach stations for onward travel to Dingxi.
Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport (LHW): The closest major airport for reaching Dingxi is Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport, northwest of Lanzhou. From the airport you can take the airport shuttle to Lanzhou city (about 30-50 RMB, ~40-60 minutes) and then an intercity bus or a conventional train on to Dingxi (see train/bus card). A private taxi or hired car direct to Dingxi will take roughly 1.5-2.5 hours depending on traffic and costs several hundred RMB.
Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY): Xi’an is a larger hub with more international and domestic connections; it’s farther away (several hours by train or road). High-speed trains or coach services from Xi’an to Lanzhou or directly toward Gansu are common (ticket prices vary widely-see train/bus card for ranges); total travel time to Dingxi from Xi’an is typically 4-6+ hours depending on route.
Train: The regional rail network uses Lanzhou’s major stations (Lanzhou West / Lanzhou Railway Station) as the main hubs for long-distance rail. Conventional (non-HSR) trains and regional services connect Lanzhou with smaller Gansu cities; from Lanzhou you can catch onward conventional trains or transfer to buses for Dingxi. Typical conventional-seat fares within the province are modest (roughly 20-150 RMB depending on distance and train class); expect total rail+transfer times to Dingxi of roughly 2-4 hours from Lanzhou.
Bus: Regular long-distance coaches run from Lanzhou’s long‑distance bus stations (and other regional hubs) to Dingxi and to local bus terminals in the prefecture.
