Dingxi Travel Guide
City City in Gansu Province, known for its history
Dingxi opens onto Gansu’s loess plateaus and dry valleys, where terraces and small villages structure the land. Travelers interested in rural China come for hiking among gullied hills, provincial temples, local noodle dishes and straightforward provincial hospitality.
Why Visit Dingxi? #
Set on Gansu’s loess plateau, Dingxi draws travelers looking for off-the-beaten-path landscapes and authentic rural life. Visitors come for Anding District’s bustling farmers’ markets, the terraced loess gullies that shape the countryside, and seasonal harvest festivals celebrating potato and buckwheat crops. Simple local eateries serve hearty hand-pulled noodles and rustic snacks, while small temples and folk crafts offer a window into regional history and traditions.
Who's Dingxi For?
Dingxi sits on the loess plateau with terraced fields and dry river valleys around the city - good for low-key landscape walks and village photography. Spring and autumn are best for colors; trails are basic, so bring sun protection and water.
The surrounding hills and ridge-lines offer rugged day hikes and off-road cycling for people who like quiet, undeveloped terrain. Local trail signage is sparse, so hire a local guide in the county towns or join a small-group trip from Dingxi.
Dingxi is inexpensive with simple guesthouses, cheap noodle shops and a busy local market where you can stretch a tight budget. Buses link Dingxi to Lanzhou and other Gansu cities, making it an offbeat stop on a budget inland route.
Local Gansu-style dishes and hearty noodles dominate: lamb, preserved vegetables and dry-fruit snacks sold in markets. Food is very affordable - expect local bowls under ¥20 and street snacks for a few yuan - but dining options stay basic.

How to Get to Dingxi
Dingxi is usually reached via Lanzhou-the provincial transport hub-and by regional buses or conventional trains rather than direct air service. The main airport people use is Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport (LHW); long-distance rail and coach services converge at Lanzhou West / Lanzhou Railway Station and Lanzhou's coach stations for onward travel to Dingxi.
Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport (LHW): The closest major airport for reaching Dingxi is Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport, northwest of Lanzhou. From the airport you can take the airport shuttle to Lanzhou city (about 30-50 RMB, ~40-60 minutes) and then an intercity bus or a conventional train on to Dingxi (see train/bus card). A private taxi or hired car direct to Dingxi will take roughly 1.5-2.5 hours depending on traffic and costs several hundred RMB.
Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY): Xi’an is a larger hub with more international and domestic connections; it’s farther away (several hours by train or road). High-speed trains or coach services from Xi’an to Lanzhou or directly toward Gansu are common (ticket prices vary widely-see train/bus card for ranges); total travel time to Dingxi from Xi’an is typically 4-6+ hours depending on route.
Train: The regional rail network uses Lanzhou’s major stations (Lanzhou West / Lanzhou Railway Station) as the main hubs for long-distance rail. Conventional (non-HSR) trains and regional services connect Lanzhou with smaller Gansu cities; from Lanzhou you can catch onward conventional trains or transfer to buses for Dingxi. Typical conventional-seat fares within the province are modest (roughly 20-150 RMB depending on distance and train class); expect total rail+transfer times to Dingxi of roughly 2-4 hours from Lanzhou.
Bus: Regular long-distance coaches run from Lanzhou’s long‑distance bus stations (and other regional hubs) to Dingxi and to local bus terminals in the prefecture. Fares on intercity coaches are generally affordable (around 40-100 RMB depending on origin) and travel times from Lanzhou are commonly about 2-3 hours. Within Dingxi, local buses and intercity minibuses connect county towns; local fares are typically very low (a few RMB per trip).
How to Get Around Dingxi
Dingxi is best navigated using a mix of intercity coaches or conventional trains via Lanzhou, then local buses, taxis or Didi for final legs. For short distances within town, walking or an e‑bike is convenient; for intercity travel, book buses or trains in advance during busy periods.
- Train (20-150 RMB) - Regional and conventional trains are useful for reaching the Gansu corridor; most long‑distance rail travelers change at Lanzhou West or Lanzhou Railway Station to continue toward Dingxi. Train travel is comfortable and reliable for longer legs, but services directly into small prefectural cities may be limited; check China Railway (12306) for schedules and classes. Advance booking is recommended during holidays.
- Intercity coach (40-100 RMB) - Intercity buses connect Lanzhou, other Gansu cities and county seats in the Dingxi area. Coaches run frequently from Lanzhou's long‑distance bus stations and drop at Dingxi's main bus terminals. Coaches are often the most direct and economical way to reach smaller towns; bring cash and expect basic onboard comfort.
- Taxi / Didi (5-200+ RMB) - Taxis and Didi (China's major ride-hailing app) are the most flexible option for short hops, airport transfers and trips where public transit is slow. Metered taxis inside Dingxi are inexpensive for short distances, but long intercity hires (e.g., Lanzhou→Dingxi) are costly-agree a price or use the app for a quote before starting the trip.
- Local bus (1-5 RMB) - Dingxi has a city bus network and minibuses serving urban districts and nearby townships. Fares are low (typically a few RMB) and buses are the cheapest way to get around, though routes and frequencies can be limited outside peak hours-have a map or ask at your hotel for the best lines.
- Bicycle / e-bike (2-15 RMB) - Short trips in central Dingxi are often easy by bike or shared e‑bike; many streets are compact and rideable. Shared e‑bikes and rental outlets provide a cheap, convenient way to explore at slow pace-watch for local traffic rules and scooter lanes.
- Walking - The downtown area is compact enough to explore on foot; walking is the best way to discover local markets, shops and food stalls. Expect uneven pavements in places and carry water during hot months.
