Dinas Emrys

Dinas Emrys is an ancient hillfort site in north Wales, noted for its earthworks and strong association with the Welsh legend of Vortigern and the prophetic dragons. The site contains visible stone and earth remains concentrated on a rocky hilltop.

The principal attraction is the association with the story of Merlin (Myrddin) and the red and white dragons said to have been found beneath the hill; visitors examine the summit earthworks, a small pool feature and panoramic views over the surrounding valleys. The footprint is compact so visits are typically short walks combined with local trails.

Archaeological evidence shows the site was used as a defended location in the early medieval period and earlier, with later medieval activity layered above earlier earthworks. The legendary account of Vortigern and the dragons is a medieval narrative linked to the site rather than an archaeological description.

The hill sits within Snowdonia in Gwynedd, north Wales, above local valleys and within walking distance of nearby villages and lanes that serve as access points. It is accessed from local car parks and rural footpaths.
