Dimmuborgir is a notable lava-field formation and geological site near Lake Mývatn in northeastern Iceland, characterised by tall basalt pillars, collapsed lava tubes and hollow structures. The name translates roughly as “dark castles” and reflects the dramatic stacked and tower-like lava formations.
Walks and boardwalks take visitors through the major formations and viewpoints; the area is popular for short hikes and photography, and local folklore associates the formations with elves, trolls and the Icelandic Yule-Lads. The rock structures form a compact area of distinctive lava morphology.
The formations originated from post-glacial volcanic eruptions where lava flowed over wet ground or lake sediments, producing collapsed chambers and hollow pillars. The site is studied for its volcanic geomorphology and is one of the most accessible lava formations near Lake Mývatn.

Tips for Visiting Dimmuborgir #
- Go to Dimmuborgir at sunrise or late afternoon for the best light on the lava towers and to avoid the bulk of daytime tour-bus visitors; it sits just east of Lake Mývatn and pairs well with Hverir and the Mývatn baths in the same outing.
- Park at the marked lot off Route 1 and follow the waymarked boardwalk loops-stick to the paths to protect fragile formations and note that a small visitor fee or parking charge may be collected at the site.
- Take the longer loop rather than only the close-in formations; the extended trail gives panoramic context for the lava field and quieter perspectives away from the busiest photo spots.
