Bagan’s Dhammayangyi Temple is the largest temple on the archaeological plain, notable for massive brickwork and narrow corridors; tourists come for structural scale, sunsets and the site’s place in Bagan’s temple network.
Dhammayangyi Temple is a large 12th century temple in the Bagan Archaeological Zone of central Myanmar. It is the largest single-temple construction in Bagan and is notable for its massive brickwork.
The temple is distinguished by exceptionally large, tightly bonded brick masonry and very thick outer walls; its exterior massing and size are among its principal attractions. Inside, narrow passages and blocked chambers reflect the monument’s incomplete or heavily filled interior, which limits access to inner sanctuaries.
Construction was undertaken by King Narathu during his reign in the mid 12th century; the building was left effectively unfinished and is associated in chronicles with the turbulent politics of that period. Over time the structure has remained substantially as-built and is one of Bagan’s most prominent monuments.
The temple stands within the Bagan plain near the modern settlements of Nyaung U and Old Bagan in Mandalay Region, Myanmar, amid the dense concentration of Pagan-period temples and monuments.
- Construction date: Built between 1167 and 1170 by King Narathu, it is the largest and most massive brick temple in the Bagan plain.
