Devil's Throat Cave

Devil’s Throat Cave (Dyavolsko Garlo) is a karst cave in the Trigrad Gorge of the Rhodope Mountains in Smolyan Province, Bulgaria, noted for its large vertical entrance where a river plunges underground. It is one of the best-known caves in the Trigrad area.

Visitors follow a short route of steps and a wooden walkway that leads close to the main sink chamber and viewing platforms, experiencing the powerful sound and spray of the subterranean river. The site is operated as a show cave with fixed paths that bring visitors near the dramatic shaft.

The cave is a natural karst formation developed over long periods by flowing water and local limestone dissolution; it has long been known to local communities and later adapted for tourism with walkways and lighting. Interpretive signage and safe access measures have been added to facilitate visits.

Situated within Trigrad Gorge in the southern Rhodopes, the cave lies near the village of Trigrad in Smolyan Province and is accessed by local roads that serve the gorge and surrounding mountain attractions.

• Access and safety: A wooden walkway and steps take visitors close to the main vertical shaft, but parts of the cave remain wet and slippery so sturdy footwear and caution are advisable.
• Best viewing spot: The most dramatic experience is standing near the main sink chamber where the underground river creates loud water flow and spray; this viewpoint is reached via the installed boardwalks.
