The reservoir is managed for flood control, hydroelectric power and recreation, and is a popular regional destination for boating, fishing and camping. Facilities include boat ramps and campgrounds in the Detroit Lake State Recreation Area.
The dam and reservoir were built and are managed as part of a multiuse river program; since completion the lake has been an important component of local water management and outdoor recreation.
The lake sits adjacent to the small town of Detroit in Marion County, within the western Cascades and is accessible by road from nearby communities.
