Detian Waterfall

Waterfall Transboundary waterfall on China-Vietnam border, dramatic cascades

Border waterfall on the Guangxi-Vietnam frontier (linked to Ban Gioc), Detian offers tiered cascades, boat rides and karst scenery; visitors come for cross-border views, photography and trips that combine Chinese and Vietnamese riverfront villages.

Overview

Detian Waterfall is a large transboundary waterfall on the China-Vietnam border where the Quây Sơn (Guichun) River drops through a karst landscape. It is one of the region’s most prominent cross-border waterfalls and a major scenic attraction in Guangxi province and northern Vietnam.

What visitors find

The waterfall consists of multiple drops and broad cascades that spread across a wide limestone escarpment, producing a visually wide and segmented curtain of water; seasonal flow alters its width and intensity. Viewing platforms on both the Chinese and Vietnamese sides provide different perspectives, and boat trips on the lower river allow closer approaches in suitable conditions.

History

The falls are a natural feature formed by river erosion in a karst region; they have long been known to local communities on both sides of the border and have been developed for tourism in recent decades with visitor facilities and viewpoints added by local authorities.

Location

Detian lies on the border between Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China and Cao Bang province in northern Vietnam, set within a karst landscape of cliffs, river valleys, and forested hills.

  • Two names and border location: Located on the transboundary Quây Sơn/Guichun River, the falls are frequently referred to by both names - Ban Gioc on the Vietnamese side and Detian on the Chinese side.
  • Best time for fullest flow: Flow is strongest in the rainy season and immediately after, so peak volume and dramatic cascades are typically seen in late summer and early autumn.

How to Get to Detian Waterfall #

Detian (Ban Gioc) Waterfall is in Guangxi on the China-Vietnam border. The usual mainland approach is via Nanning: take a long‑distance bus or drive from Nanning (roughly 240-270 km southwest, about 3.5-4.5 hours by road) to the Chongzuo/Detian area, then transfer to a local bus or organized shuttle/tour that serves the Detian Scenic Area (local transfers from Chongzuo typically take another 1-2 hours). There is a short walk inside the scenic area from the parking/coach drop‑off to the waterfall viewpoints.

Tips for Visiting Detian Waterfall #

  • Plan for the rainy season (roughly June-August) if you want the waterfalls at their fullest; for fewer tour groups and softer light, arrive at the Chinese or Vietnamese viewing areas early in the morning.
  • If you can, see both sides - Detian (China) and Ban Gioc (Vietnam) - for complementary perspectives of the falls, but only cross at official border points with your passport and proper permissions.
  • On the Chinese side, take one of the local boat/raft rides from the designated landing to get close to the cascade - these are operated on-site and give much better viewpoints than the upper platforms.

Best Time to Visit Detian Waterfall #

Go in the early wet season (June-August) to see the falls at their fullest, keeping safety and trail conditions in mind.

Lower river flow exposes more rock and offers easier hiking and clearer viewpoints, with cooler, drier weather.
Shoulder seasons
April-May, September-October · 18-28°C
