Desecheo Island
Island Uninhabited Puerto Rican island and wildlife refuge
A small uninhabited island west of Puerto Rico near Mayagüez, Desecheo attracts day-trip boaters for snorkeling, diving and seabird observation; there are no permanent visitor facilities.
Desecheo is an uninhabited island in the Mona Passage off Puerto Rico, administered as a protected area and noted for its marine habitats and diving. It lies to the west of Puerto Rico’s main island and has no resident population or visitor facilities.
The surrounding waters feature coral reefs, surge channels and steep drop-offs that attract recreational divers seeking clear visibility and reef fishes. On land, low rocky shores and small sandy coves provide habitat for seabirds and transient shore life rather than developed beaches.
The island has a history of military use in the 20th century and later conservation management; land restoration and invasive-species removal efforts have been undertaken to protect native wildlife. Because of its protected status and the island’s past, access is managed by authorities and visitors generally arrive only by organised boat trips with permits.
Desecheo sits in the Mona Passage off Puerto Rico’s west coast, administered from the Mayagüez area, and is reached by boat from Puerto Rico.
- Access restrictions: Entry to the island is controlled because it is managed as a protected wildlife area and has been closed or restricted to public access at times; visits typically require permits or are arranged through licensed dive operators.
- Primary attractions: The island is uninhabited and is best known for scuba diving and marine wildlife rather than visitor infrastructure.
What to See #
- Reefs and dive sites: Fringing coral reefs and submerged drop-offs form the principal dive sites around the island, offering clear water and a variety of reef fish and invertebrates.
- Beaches and wildlife areas: Small rocky beaches and ledges provide nesting habitat for seabirds and resting spots for visiting marine fauna, but there are no facilities for overnight stays.
