Derryveagh Mountains
Mountains Remote mountain range in County Donegal, rugged landscapes
In County Donegal, the Derryveagh Mountains form rugged heath and bogland with peaks like Errigal; hikers and drivers use narrow roads to reach glens, remote lakes and exposed ridge walks.
The Derryveagh Mountains are the principal upland range of County Donegal in northwest Ireland, containing moorland, lakes and rugged peaks. The range includes Mount Errigal, the county’s highest peak at 751 m, and significant protected land within Glenveagh National Park.
Hikers and nature visitors come for upland walks, scenic drives, lochs and the mountain scenery of the central Donegal plateau; trails range from short climbs to multi-day routes. Glenveagh National Park adds formal walking routes, a castle estate and managed gardens that broaden visitor facilities and viewing points.
The landscape was shaped by glaciation and later agricultural and estate management; Glenveagh Castle and associated estate are 19th-century features within a much older glacial landscape. The area has been conserved through the 20th century with the creation of national park protections.

How to Get to Derryveagh Mountains #
The Derryveagh Mountains occupy a large area of north County Donegal. The range is best accessed by car - main approaches use the N56 and regional roads (for example from Letterkenny or from the west coast towns). Driving distances vary with your chosen trailhead: Letterkenny is the largest nearby service town and many common access points are roughly 40-80 km from Letterkenny depending on the exact valley or pass.
There is limited public transport into the hills themselves; take a bus or train to Letterkenny or Derry (Londonderry) and continue by local taxi or organised tour to trailheads.
Tips for Visiting Derryveagh Mountains #
- Use Glenveagh National Park as the usual access point-start at the park visitor centre for maps, trail advice and parking before heading into the Derryveagh range.
- Set out early in fair weather: mornings give the best visibility for mountain views and help avoid afternoon cloud and stronger winds common in Donegal.
- Many visitors stick to the castle and lakeshore; ask at the visitor centre about longer ridge routes (for example toward Errigal and Lough Beagh) if you want more solitude and panoramic viewpoints.
