Derinkuyu underground city
Archaeological Site Ancient subterranean multi-level city used as refuge
Multi-level underground city in Cappadocia carved into tuff, with tunnels, rooms and ventilation shafts once used for refuge. Tourists tour excavated levels, descend passageways and learn about subterranean settlement techniques.
Derinkuyu is a multi-level underground city in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey, carved from soft volcanic tuff and known for its extensive system of rooms, tunnels and shafts. The excavated complex reaches significant depth and was designed to shelter populations for extended periods.
Visitors can walk through narrow tunnels, stairways and connected chambers that include communal rooms, kitchens, stables and chapels; engineered ventilation shafts and stone doorways demonstrate the city’s defensive and practical planning. The experience highlights subterranean architecture and adaptive use of volcanic rock for habitation.
The underground city was expanded over centuries and used by local populations for refuge from raids and warfare; primary phases of expansion date to the Byzantine era when regional communities dug and connected chambers to shelter civilians and livestock. Derinkuyu’s depth and complexity reflect repeated enlargement and reuse across late antique and medieval periods.
Derinkuyu lies in Nevşehir Province in central Anatolia within the Cappadocia region, near the modern town of Derinkuyu and within driving distance of regional tourist centres such as Göreme and Nevşehir.
- Depth and capacity: Excavated to a depth of roughly 60 meters, the complex was large enough in its peak phases to shelter many thousands of people and includes ventilation shafts and communal rooms.
What to See #
- Underground chambers and tunnels: Multi-level carved chambers including living quarters, kitchens, churches, stables and storage rooms connected by tunnels and ventilation shafts across several floors.
- Rolling stone doors: Large circular stone doors used to seal passages and protect inhabitants from intruders, visible at several primary access points within the complex.
