Denbigh Castle and town walls

Denbigh Castle and town walls are a medieval castle complex and fortified town enclosure in the town of Denbigh, Denbighshire, North Wales, established in the late 13th century as part of Edwardian frontier works.

The site features extensive ruined curtain walls, surviving towers and the remains of inner and outer wards. Walks along the ramparts give direct contact with masonry and battlements and provide panoramic views of the surrounding Vale of Clwyd. The town walls run through the historic core and connect the castle to defensive gateways and later medieval urban streets.

Construction began in the late 1200s as an English royal fortress; the castle and walls were developed over the 13th and 14th centuries. The complex saw military action and decline over later centuries and became a picturesque ruin by the post-medieval period.

The castle and walls sit on a limestone ridge within the town of Denbigh in north Wales, overlooking the Vale of Clwyd. The built-up historic town surrounds parts of the defended circuit and modern access is from streets leading up to the castle precinct.
