Denali
Mountain North America's tallest peak with glaciated slopes
Denali, North America’s highest peak within Denali National Park, draws climbers and wildlife watchers; visitors take bus trips on the park road or flightseeing tours for mountain perspectives.
Denali is the highest mountain in North America, with an official summit elevation of 20,310 feet (6,190 m), located in the Alaska Range within Denali National Park and Preserve. It is a dominant feature of interior Alaska and a focal point for climbers and natural-history visitors.
Climbing Denali is a major mountaineering undertaking that requires technical skills, glacier travel and high-altitude experience; routes are cold and remote with objective hazards. For non-climbers, the park road, viewpoints such as Wonder Lake and ranger-led programs provide opportunities to view the mountain and the park’s wildlife and landscapes.
The mountain was long known by the native Koyukon people as Denali; it was officially called Mount McKinley for much of the 20th century before the federal name was changed back to Denali in 2015. The surrounding park was created to protect the landscape, wildlife habitat and cultural values.
Denali and Denali National Park lie in interior Alaska along the Alaska Range; the park entrance is reached from the small gateway communities along the Parks Highway, and the protected area covers millions of acres of tundra, mountains and glaciers.
- Name and elevation: The peak's official name returned to Denali in 2015; it is the tallest mountain in North America at 20,310 feet (6,190 m).
- Access: Private vehicle access on the park road is limited beyond the park entrance; most visitors use park shuttle buses or guided tours to reach interior viewpoints.
What to See #
- Denali (peak): Denali, the mountain peak itself, rising to 20,310 feet (6,190 m) above sea level and standing as the highest point in North America.
- Park Road: The Denali Park Road, an approximately 92-mile route that provides staged access into the park; most of the road beyond the park entrance is accessible by park shuttle or tour bus only.
- Wonder Lake: Wonder Lake and surrounding viewpoints that offer classic photographic views of Denali and its reflection on calm days; the lake is located within the park interior and reached by the park road.
How to Get to Denali #
Denali (Denali National Park) is accessed from the Denali Park Road off the Parks Highway (Alaska Route 3). By road the park entrance is about 240 miles (≈386 km) north of Anchorage via the Parks Highway (roughly a 4-5 hour drive) and about 120 miles (≈193 km) south of Fairbanks. The Alaska Railroad also runs seasonal passenger service from Anchorage and Fairbanks to the Denali Park Depot (train schedules vary by season); from the park entrance/visitor center most trailheads and viewpoint areas are reached by the park shuttle system or short walks.
Tips for Visiting Denali #
- Book bus or tour access and lodging well ahead of high season-Denali Park Road restricts private vehicle access beyond Savage River, so the park bus system is the reliable way to reach deeper viewing areas.
- Aim for early-morning park buses for the best chances of wildlife sightings and clearer mountain views; the mountain is often most visible at first light before afternoon cloud build-up.
- Use the official park bus schedules and reserve seats early-longer rides to higher mileposts (e.g., Toklat, Kantishna) fill up quickly and are the primary way most visitors see wildlife and remote viewpoints.
Best Time to Visit Denali #
Denali is best visited in the short summer window (mid‑May to August) when access and park services are available and conditions are least severe.
