Delta de l’Ebre Natural Park protects the Ebro River delta on the Mediterranean coast of Catalonia in northeast Spain. The delta is one of the region’s largest wetland systems and is ecologically important for migratory birds.

Within the park visitors find a network of lagoons, reedbeds, sandspits, beaches and extensive rice fields; common activities include birdwatching, boat tours, cycling and walking. The Ecomuseu del Delta in Deltebre and several observation hides provide interpretation and prime birdwatching points.

The landform is the product of sediment deposition by the Ebro River over millennia; human activities, particularly rice agriculture and river regulation, have shaped the delta and led to its protection to conserve habitats and species. The area is managed to balance conservation with traditional agriculture and coastal uses.

The park is located on the Mediterranean coast of southern Catalonia in the province of Tarragona, bordering the towns of Deltebre, Sant Jaume d’Enveja and Amposta.

• Best time for birds: Seasonal bird migrations concentrate in spring and autumn, with large numbers of waterfowl and waders including flamingos and herons visible from hides and observation points.
• Agriculture and landscape: Rice cultivation is a dominant human use inside the delta and shapes the mosaic of flooded fields, channels and lagoons that support wetland biodiversity.

What to See#

• Ecomuseu del Delta (Deltebre): A visitor and interpretation centre located in the town of Deltebre that provides exhibitions about the delta’s ecology, local culture and sustainable agriculture.
• Illa de Buda: A low-lying island and wetland complex in the central delta containing lagoons and reedbeds that are key habitats for waterbirds.
• Punta del Fangar: A long sandy spit at the seaward edge of the delta that forms beaches and dunes, notable for shoreline dynamics and bird habitat.

Delta de l’Ebre is reached from the towns of Deltebre and Sant Carles de la Ràpita in Catalonia. By car take the AP-7 or N-340 and local C-12/C-42 roads; public buses connect Tarragona and Tortosa to delta towns. The park is bike-friendly and flat, making cycling a popular way to explore.

• Rent a bike in Deltebre to explore the dykes and rice fields-the region is flat and very bikeable.
• Visit the Ecomuseum in Deltebre to understand rice cultivation and the delta's ecology.
• Go birdwatching at dawn or dusk on the freshwater lagoons for the best chance to see flamingos and herons.
