Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is a protected park straddling the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border along a 40-mile section of the Delaware River and centered on the river’s dramatic water gap. How to Get to Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area #
Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is primarily accessed by car along I‑80 and the river roads (US‑209/PA‑611). From the New York City area it’s roughly a 1.5-2 hour drive (about 70-90 miles) depending on your starting point; there are multiple roadside trailheads and visitor areas off I‑80 and nearby state routes. Public transit within the park is very limited, so car travel is the most practical option.

- On weekends and holidays arrive early at popular trailheads (for example the Mt. Tammany area) to secure parking and avoid crowded paths; weekdays and shoulder seasons are much quieter.
- Choose the New Jersey side for steeper, more panoramic hikes (Mt. Tammany) and the Pennsylvania side for gentler, longer trails and quieter river access (Mt. Minsi and valley trails).
- Beyond the main overlooks, detour to short boardwalks and falls (Dingmans Falls area) to find less‑busy scenery that many day visitors skip.
