Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is a protected park straddling the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border along a 40-mile section of the Delaware River and centered on the river’s dramatic water gap. The area was established to preserve river corridors, ridges, and recreational access and protects large tracts of forest and river shoreline.

  • Best time for views: Peak fall foliage typically occurs in mid-October and provides the clearest long-distance views from ridge-top trails.
  • Trailhead and parking: Some of the most popular trailheads are on both the Pennsylvania and New Jersey sides; parking can fill early on weekends in summer and fall.

What to See #

  • Mount Tammany: A steep-rising summit on the New Jersey side that reaches about 1,527 feet and is the most popular hike in the park, with several trails providing dramatic views over the Delaware River and the water gap.
  • Delaware River Water Gap: A roughly 40-mile stretch of the Delaware River where the river cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge, forming the scenic water gap that gives the park its name.
  • Waterfalls and Falls Areas: A collection of waterfalls and viewing areas on the Pennsylvania side including Dingmans Falls and smaller cascades that are reached via short boardwalks and trails.
