The cave’s interior includes hundreds to over a thousand animal images, engravings and abstract signs depicting species such as horses, mammoths and felids, executed with techniques including painting and engraving. The original cave is highly sensitive and closed to general visitation to conserve its deposits.

Discovered by speleologists in 1994, the cave attracted rapid scientific interest for its extensive, stratified Paleolithic art and associated archaeological deposits. Its preservation and dating have contributed significantly to understanding Upper Paleolithic artistic practices.
The cave is located in the Ardèche department of south-central France, in a karstic landscape near the Pont d’Arc natural arch and the Ardèche river valley.
