Deadvlei
Area Clay pan with petrified trees amid red sand dunes
Inside Namibia’s Sossusvlei region, Deadvlei is a white clay pan dotted with blackened camelthorn skeletons set against rust-orange dunes. Photographers, hikers and guided safari groups arrive for stark contrasts and dawn light.
Deadvlei is a white clay pan in the Sossusvlei area of the Namib Desert, within Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia, notable for its scattered, dead camelthorn trees set against towering orange sand dunes. The stark color contrasts and preserved tree skeletons make it one of southern Africa’s most photographed desert features.
The pan contains blackened, sun-dried camelthorn trunks that died centuries ago and have not decomposed due to the hyper-arid climate. The clay surface is flat and cracked, surrounded by dunes that rise to several hundred metres, creating a strong visual contrast between pan and sand.
The pan formed where the Tsauchab River once flooded and deposited clay; later, shifting dunes cut off the water supply and the remaining trees died and were preserved by the dry conditions. The site is accessible via the Sossusvlei/Sesriem access roads and a short walk from the dune edge.
Deadvlei lies in the interior of Namib-Naukluft Park in southwestern Namibia, within the Sossusvlei dune sea. It is reached from the visitor area at Sesriem and sits among the highest dunes in the region.
- Best time to visit: Light is strongest for photography in the early morning and late afternoon when the contrast between the blackened trees, white pan and orange dunes is most pronounced.
- Access note: Reaching the pan involves driving into the Sossusvlei area and then walking from the dune parking area; expect a short walk over sand to reach the clay pan itself.
What to See #
- Deadvlei pan: The clay pan itself is a white, flat depression dotted with dark, dead camelthorn trees that have been preserved by the dry climate.
- Surrounding sand dunes (including Big Daddy): The adjacent dunes include some of the highest sand formations in the area, with slopes reaching several hundred metres in height and visible from the pan.
