Main image

The Daxue Mountains are a major mountain range in western Sichuan, China, forming part of the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The range contains China’s easternmost 7,000-metre peaks, including Mount Gongga (Minya Konka, 7,556 m).

The range offers steep, glaciated peaks, deep river gorges and high alpine meadows; glaciers and permanent snow exist above several thousand metres. Mountaineers come for technical climbs on peaks above 7,000 m while trekkers and nature visitors use lower valleys and passes for multi-day routes and highland scenery.

The mountains were shaped by tectonic uplift associated with the India-Asia collision and subsequent glacial sculpting during the Cenozoic and Quaternary periods. Over centuries the ridges and valleys have supported Tibetan and Sino-Tibetan communities and served as routes between plateau and lowland regions.

The Daxue Mountains sit on the western side of Sichuan province at the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, running roughly north-south for several hundred kilometres. The range lies several hundred kilometres west of Chengdu and occupies remote, high-relief terrain in western Sichuan.

  • Highest peak: Contains China's easternmost 7,000-metre peak, making it a focal point for high-altitude mountaineering and glaciology.
  • Best seasons: Best visiting season is roughly late spring to early autumn when high passes and trekking routes are most accessible and avalanche risk is lower.

What to See #

  • Mount Gongga (Minya Konka): The highest peak of the range, standing at 7,556 m, and the surrounding high-altitude glaciers and ridges that dominate the local landscape.
  • High alpine ridges and valleys: Extensive north-south ridges, steep river valleys and high alpine zones that host the principal trekking and climbing routes through the range.

Tips for Visiting Daxue Mountains #

  • Plan travel in the late spring to early autumn window (when passes and roads are most reliably open) to maximize visibility of the Daxue range's high peaks such as Minya Konka.
  • Arrange acclimatization time and hire experienced local high‑altitude guides from gateway towns rather than attempting independent high passes; routes in the Daxue are remote and weather can change rapidly.
  • Use established valley bases and village guesthouses as staging points - many of the best viewpoints and short day‑treks are reachable from roadheads without committing to multi‑day glacier travel, and local guides will know the safest viewpoints.

Best Time to Visit Daxue Mountains #

For lower-elevation access and trekking, late spring through autumn (May-October) offers the most reliable conditions; high-altitude parts are much colder year-round.

Spring and summer (trekking season)
May-October · 10-25°C (valleys); colder at elevation
Warmer, more stable weather at lower elevations and most accessible trails - high passes may still have snow early/late in the season.
Autumn
September-November · 5-20°C (valleys); colder at elevation
Clearer skies and good visibility for mountain views; temperatures drop at higher altitudes.
Winter
December-February · below 0°C at higher elevations
Heavy snow and cold make high routes difficult or hazardous; many areas are best avoided unless properly equipped and experienced.
