Dauphiné Alps
Mountains French Alpine range popular for skiing and climbing
Part of southeastern France’s high Alps, the Dauphiné Alps contain rugged peaks, glaciers and Écrins-style terrain; mountaineers and skiers come for technical routes, alpine refuges and long ridge traverses.
The Dauphiné Alps form a distinct sector of the French Alps in southeastern France, incorporating the Écrins massif and other high ranges. The region is characterised by steep granite peaks, glaciers and high alpine valleys.
It is best known to mountaineers and alpine hikers for summits such as Barre des Écrins at 4,102 metres and technical objectives like La Meije, plus extensive glaciated terrain. The area hosts hut-to-hut routes, climbing routes of varied difficulty and backcountry skiing in winter.
Conservation and mountain tourism are concentrated within Écrins National Park, which protects a wide range of alpine habitats and provides a network of refuges and marked trails. The landscape has long been important for the development of alpine climbing and scientific mountain studies.
Geographically the Dauphiné Alps lie in southeastern France across departmental boundaries and are part of the broader French Alpine chain, offering access from regional towns and mountain gateways in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and neighbouring regions.
- Alpine character: Contains extensive glaciated terrain and steep alpine relief, making it a major destination for mountaineering, glacier travel and high-alpine hiking.

What to See #
- Écrins massif: The Massif des Écrins, a core high-mountain area including glaciers, steep peaks and classic alpine climbing routes.
- Barre des Écrins: Barre des Écrins, the highest summit in the range at 4,102 metres, a prominent target for mountaineers.
- La Meije: La Meije, a striking granitic peak known for its sharp ridges and long-standing climbing routes established in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
How to Get to Dauphiné Alps #
The Dauphiné Alps lie southeast of Grenoble, which is the principal gateway city with frequent rail connections from across France. From Grenoble you access the range by regional and departmental mountain roads to reach valley towns, ski resorts and trailheads; driving times to different parts of the massif vary from under an hour to several hours depending on destination.
Public transport into the higher valleys is limited and often seasonal; Grenoble has regional buses and train services to towns at the foot of the mountains where you can change to local buses or mountain transport.
Tips for Visiting Dauphiné Alps #
- Use Grenoble as the main northern gateway and Gap or Briançon for southern approaches-these cities offer the best road and rail access to different parts of the Dauphiné Alps and make it easier to plan day trips into specific valleys.
- Start alpine crossings early in the day during summer to avoid afternoon storms and to secure parking at popular passes; if you want quieter routes, choose smaller valleys (for example the Valbonnais or Valgaudemar) rather than the most famous ski-resort corridors.
