Darwin Island
Island Remote Galápagos islet famed for biodiversity and diving
Off Ecuador’s Galápagos, Darwin Island is remote and prized by divers for encounters with hammerhead sharks, tuna and manta rays. Tour operators bring scuba groups to its pelagic waters; seabirds and rocky islets add to the attraction.
Darwin Island is a small, uninhabited volcanic islet in the Galápagos archipelago of Ecuador known for its marine biodiversity and world-class scuba diving. It is one of the most remote and wildlife-rich sites in the Galápagos Marine Reserve.
The site is famous for encounters with large pelagic species, notably regular sightings of schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks and other large sharks, manta rays, and rich pelagic life-qualities that make it an advanced-level dive destination. Boat-based dive trips and liveaboard cruises are the usual way to visit; terrestrial landings are generally not permitted.
Named in honor of Charles Darwin’s association with the Galápagos, the island has long been part of the archipelago’s protected marine area and has been monitored for its exceptional underwater ecosystems. In recent years a natural rock arch near the island was lost to collapse, altering a well-known visual landmark.
Darwin Island sits in the northern Galápagos Islands, within Galápagos Province of Ecuador, and is remote from the inhabited islands of the archipelago.
- Darwin's Arch: A natural arch close to the island known as Darwin's Arch collapsed in 2021, changing the island's skyline and dive-site profile.
- Access and protection: Access is by liveaboard or expedition boat only; the island is uninhabited and landing is generally restricted by Galápagos regulations.
How to Get to Darwin Island #
Darwin Island in the Galápagos is remote and has no public transport, airfield or visitor facilities. Access is only by licensed live‑aboard cruise or expedition/charter boats that depart from Galápagos ports (typically Santa Cruz/Puerto Ayora, Baltra or San Cristóbal); travelers fly from mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) to the Galápagos and then join an organized expedition vessel that includes Darwin Island on its itinerary (permits and strict visitor rules apply).
Tips for Visiting Darwin Island #
- Darwin Island is strictly visited by liveaboard dive expeditions-there are no tourist landings-so plan an itinerary with an approved Galápagos liveaboard operator if you want to visit.
- Only experienced divers should attempt Darwin dives: currents are strong, conditions can be challenging, and operators typically expect advanced certification and prior open‑ocean/current-diving experience.
- Because the island is remote, expect long ocean crossings; choose an operator with up-to-date Galápagos National Park permits and a clear safety/emergency plan for deep-water expeditions.
Best Time to Visit Darwin Island #
For the Galápagos' Darwin Island, choose Dec-May for warmer, calmer diving; Jun-Nov is cooler but often better for big-pelagic encounters.
