Darul Aman Palace
Palace Historic Kabul palace noted for grand but ruined facade
An early 20th-century palace on Kabul’s western approach, Darul Aman has historic importance and recent restoration work; visitors note its neoclassical façade and its role in Afghanistan’s modern history.
Darul Aman Palace is a historic, European-style palace on the outskirts of Kabul, Afghanistan, originally built in the late 1920s during the reign of King Amanullah Khan. It was intended as a symbol of modernisation and statehood.
The site is dominated by the large, multi-storey palace building with a formal facade and extensive grounds; its damaged and restored fabric is a frequent subject for photographers and historians. Public access has varied with security conditions and restoration phases.
Commissioned in the 1920s as part of Amanullah Khan’s reform programme, the palace has been damaged repeatedly during decades of conflict in Afghanistan and was left derelict for long periods. Restoration and stabilization projects in the 21st century have aimed to preserve the structure and repurpose parts of it for official use.
Located to the west of central Kabul in Kabul Province, the palace sits on a prominent site within the city and is visible from several approaches into the capital.
