Dartmouth Castle

Dartmouth Castle is a riverside fortress at the mouth of the River Dart in Devon, England, built to protect one of the south coast’s historic harbours and featuring artillery defenses from medieval and Tudor periods.

The castle complex includes a low-lying Tudor-era gun platform and battery that directly overlook the estuary, plus surviving medieval towers and rooms that visitors can enter. Views from the gun platform give clear sightlines across the river mouth and out to sea, making the site a focal point for photography and interpretation about coastal defence.

The site originated in the medieval period as a defensive stronghold guarding Dartmouth’s harbour and was adapted over time to accommodate artillery, notably in the 16th century when gun platforms were added to counter naval threats. The castle remained militarily relevant into later centuries and has been preserved as a historic fortification.

Positioned on the western side of the River Dart at Dartmouth in Devon, the castle sits at the harbour entrance and is reached on foot from the town or by short ferry crossings across the river.
