Danevirke
Archaeological Site Ancient defensive earthworks marking Denmark-Germany border history
Danevirke comprises early medieval earthworks and fortifications across Schleswig‑Holstein, marking Danish frontier construction; visitors explore ramparts, interpretive panels and nearby Viking‑era sites.
Danevirke is a system of early medieval fortifications in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, consisting of earthen ramparts, ditches and wooden palisades that once crossed the Jutland isthmus. The earthworks were constructed and expanded from the early Middle Ages and served as a defensive frontier for the Danish kingdoms.
The site presents long stretches of visible earth banks and ditches set into the modern landscape, with interpretive signage and walking routes at preserved sections. Nearby museums and the archaeological site of Hedeby explain the fortifications’ military and economic context and display finds from excavations.
Construction began in the early medieval period, from about the 7th century, with major phases of expansion over subsequent centuries; rulers such as early Danish kings fortified the isthmus to protect territory and control movement. The Danevirke continued to be a political and military boundary through the Middle Ages and entered modern history during 19th century conflicts over the Schleswig region.
The earthworks lie near the town of Schleswig and the former trading settlement of Hedeby in northern Schleswig-Holstein, running across the base of the Jutland peninsula and visible in the countryside between the Schlei inlet and the Baltic coast.
- Age and extent: The fortifications date back to the early Middle Ages and were expanded over several centuries from the 7th century onward.
What to See #
- Main ramparts: The continuous earthwork and ditch system that runs across the Jutland isthmus, comprising multiple banks, ditches and palisade lines developed in stages from the early medieval period; the defences extend roughly 30 kilometres in total when including subsidiary earthworks.
- Hedeby (Haithabu): A major Viking Age trading settlement south of the Danevirke fortifications with extensive archaeological remains and a museum explaining the site's relation to the defences.
