Daming Palace
Archaeological Site Tang dynasty imperial palace complex in Xi'an
Located in Xi’an, the Daming Palace archaeological site preserves foundations and reconstructions of the Tang dynasty imperial complex; it’s part of museum displays that explain Tang court life.
Daming Palace was the principal imperial palace of Tang-dynasty Chang’an, located in what is now Xi’an, Shaanxi province, and constructed in the 7th century. It served as the political center of the Tang court for several centuries.
Excavations have revealed large foundation platforms, ceremonial halls and gate complexes; the palace complex occupied a very large area and was one of the Tang capital’s major architectural ensembles. The site is now conserved and presented as an archaeological park with interpreted ruins and some reconstructed elements.
The palace was built and expanded under Tang imperial patronage and functioned as the administrative and ceremonial seat of the dynasty until the late Tang period. After the Tang era the complex fell out of use and was gradually dismantled, with later archaeological work uncovering its outline and principal structures.
The ruins lie within modern Xi’an, incorporated into a city heritage park to the north of Xi’an’s historic center and accessible from the urban area.
- Scale: The palace complex covered a very large area in Tang-period Chang'an, roughly on the order of a few square kilometers, and is presented today as an archaeological park.
