Damaraland

Damaraland is a broad, semi-arid region of north-central Namibia characterized by rugged valleys, inselbergs and arid savanna. The area is noted for its rock art, distinctive geological formations and desert-adapted wildlife.

Extensive rock engraving panels and archaeological sites, dramatic geological formations such as pillar-like outcrops and steep ridges, plus opportunities to see desert-adapted elephants and other wildlife. Guided drives and walking visits focus on heritage sites and scenic viewpoints.

Named after the Damara people who have traditionally occupied parts of the region, the area contains rock art and habitation sites that document human activity across millennia. In modern times sites such as Twyfelfontein have received heritage protection and archaeological study.

Spanning parts of northwestern and north-central Namibia, Damaraland lies inland from the Skeleton Coast and Kaokoveld, with access from towns such as Khorixas and the regional centers; it covers a swath of arid terrain and rugged hills.

• Wildlife viewing: The area supports sightings of desert-adapted elephants and other wildlife adapted to arid environments, best seen with experienced local guides.

What to See #

• Twyfelfontein rock engravings: A sandstone valley site with thousands of petroglyphs and a concentration of rock engravings that was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
• Geological formations and sculptures: Wind-sculpted columns and basaltic pinnacles known locally as the Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain, visible geological formations in the area.
