Dall Island
Island Remote Alaskan island off southeast coast, timber history
Large, remote island in Alaska’s Alexander Archipelago with dense temperate rainforest; visited by anglers, birders and boaters for salmon fishing, sea-kayaking and brown bear sightings along the coast.
Dall Island is a large, forested island in the Alaska Panhandle, part of southeastern Alaska’s island archipelago and named after the naturalist William Healey Dall.
The island is visited for its remote coastline, wildlife viewing and fishing opportunities rather than for developed tourist infrastructure; its rugged shores and nearshore waters are important habitat for marine species. Access is generally by private boat or local water transport and the island has little in the way of permanent visitor facilities.
Indigenous use and maritime activity have long been part of the island’s history; later mapping and naming by American naturalists and explorers gave it the current name.
Dall Island lies off the southwestern side of the Alexander Archipelago in the Alaska Panhandle and is separated from larger nearby islands by coastal waterways.
- Name and character: Named for the naturalist William Healey Dall, the island is largely remote and sparsely populated with extensive shoreline used by marine wildlife.
