How to Get to Dalanzadgad
Dalanzadgad, gateway to the Gobi, is most easily reached by a short domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar. Overland buses and private transfers are available but are long; within the town taxis and walking are the norm.
Dalanzadgad Airport (DLZ): Dalanzadgad (Ömnögovi) has regular domestic flights from Ulaanbaatar; airlines operate year-round and flights are about 1-1.5 hours. On arrival a taxi to town takes around 10-20 minutes and costs a few thousand MNT.
Ulaanbaatar (ULN): Most visitors fly into Ulaanbaatar and connect onward to Dalanzadgad; the domestic terminal handles scheduled services - book ahead, especially for high season (Gobi tourism season).
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service to Dalanzadgad; the rail network does not serve this part of Ömnögovi province conveniently for travellers.
Bus / Road: Overland buses and private transfers run from Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad; road trips take much longer than flights (often 8-12+ hours) but are possible. Many visitors prefer to fly for time efficiency when visiting the Gobi.
How to Get Around Dalanzadgad #
Dalanzadgad is the gateway town to the Gobi; the centre is walkable and many tour operators are based here. For Gobi excursions you’ll typically hire 4x4 vehicles or join organized tours; local taxis handle town transfers. The town also has a small airport with seasonal flights to Ulaanbaatar. Expect tour prices for Gobi trips to be significantly higher than local transport fares because of fuel and vehicle hire costs.
