Daisetsuzan National Park
National Park Hokkaido national park featuring volcanic peaks and hot springs
Hokkaido’s largest national park, Daisetsuzan offers volcanic peaks, alpine hiking, onsen and extensive backcountry routes; visitors come for multi-day treks, autumn foliage and mountain hot springs.
Daisetsuzan National Park is a large mountain and volcanic area in central Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, known for alpine terrain and wild, volcanic peaks. It contains Hokkaido’s highest mountains and extensive natural habitats across a broad protected area.
The park offers hiking across volcanic ridges, alpine meadows, and geothermal features, with Mount Asahi (Asahidake) the highest summit at about 2,291 metres. Hot spring resorts on the park’s edges serve as bases for day trips and hikes, while autumn leaf colour and summer alpine flowers are major attractions.
The area has been protected to conserve its natural volcanic landscapes and alpine ecosystems; infrastructure such as ropeways and mountain huts developed to support hiking and outdoor access. Park management focuses on balancing recreation with habitat protection.
Situated in central Hokkaido, the park spans a large interior area of the island and is accessed from towns and onsen resorts on its eastern and western flanks.
- Seasonal highlights: Alpine tundra and volcanic peaks produce a short but intense summer flowering season and notable autumn leaf colour from late September into October at higher elevations.
- Access and conditions: Accessible by road and ropeway in several places, but many central ridges require mountain hiking experience and can be snowy well into summer.
What to See #
- Mount Asahi (Asahidake): Mount Asahi (Asahidake) rises to about 2,291 metres and is Hokkaido's highest peak, accessible by ropeway from the east side of the park.
- Sounkyo Onsen area: Sounkyo and other onsen towns sit on the park's eastern fringes and serve as common bases for hikes and sightseeing in the volcanic calderas and gorges.
