Daikaku-ji is a Buddhist temple complex in western Kyoto that originated as the Saga Imperial Villa in the early 9th century. It is notable for preserving elements of an imperial villa and its associated garden from the Heian period.

The temple grounds centre on a large pond and its surrounding landscaped garden, laid out in the style of Heian-period sightseeing gardens where the pond was used for boat-viewing. Buildings and garden features are the primary reasons visitors go, and seasonal displays of cherry blossom and autumn colour are commonly observed around the pond and temple buildings.

The site began as an imperial villa built by Emperor Saga in the early 800s and was later converted into a temple complex that maintained close ties to the imperial household over subsequent centuries. The complex has been altered and rebuilt several times but retains its historic garden layout and core buildings.

Daikaku-ji sits in Ukyō Ward in the western part of Kyoto city, immediately north of the Saga-Arashiyama neighbourhood. The temple is accessible from central Kyoto by road and public transport and is set among urban and suburban areas with nearby river and wooded hills.

  • Founding: Founded as an imperial villa in the early 9th century by Emperor Saga and later converted into a Buddhist temple complex.
  • Garden and pond: Contains a large pond and classical Heian-period garden that remain central to the temple grounds and layout.
