Temple Historic Buddhist temple complex with famed pagoda
Daigo‑ji Temple in Kyoto is a sprawling Shingon complex with a five‑storied pagoda, carefully tended gardens and seasonal displays of cherry blossom and autumn leaves. Pilgrims and culture travelers explore halls, tea gardens and historic architecture.
Daigo-ji is a large Shingon Buddhist temple complex on the slopes of Mount Daigo in southeastern Kyoto, founded in the 9th century and notable for its historic buildings and gardens. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
The complex includes the famous Sambō-in subtemple with a stroll garden, a Heian-period five-storey pagoda that dates to 951, and a sequence of halls and gates extending up the mountainside into forested grounds. The site is well known for cherry-blossom viewing in spring and vivid autumn colours.
Established in the 9th century as a Shingon centre, Daigo-ji expanded through the Heian and later periods and became a place of court patronage; a famous cherry-blossom party hosted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1598 cemented its cultural significance. Several structures survive from the 10th and 11th centuries, while other buildings were rebuilt over time.
Located in Fushimi Ward in southern Kyoto on Mount Daigo, the temple lies southeast of Kyoto’s central districts and is accessed by public transport and local buses from the city.
- Best seasons and historic hanami: Cherry-blossom viewing and autumn colours are the two peak visitor seasons; the Sambō-in garden is particularly famous for Hideyoshi's 1598 'Daigo no hanami' event.
What to See #
- Sambō-in subtemple and gardens: A small landscaped temple compound and garden founded as a retirement villa for an 11th-century imperial court official, offering a well-known strolling garden and tea-house setting.
