Dadiwan denotes a Neolithic archaeological culture in Gansu known from settlement sites, early agriculture and distinctive pottery-of interest mainly to archaeologists and students of prehistoric China.
The Dadiwan culture is an archaeological Neolithic cultural designation based on remains first identified at sites near Dadiwan in Gansu province, China. It is recognized by archaeologists for its early settled sites and material remains in the Loess Plateau region.
Material associated with the Dadiwan culture includes early village settlements, pottery and evidence for prehistoric farming and domestic architecture. The culture is placed in the broader sequence of Neolithic and early Bronze Age developments in north-central China.
Excavations at the type site and related localities established its importance for understanding regional prehistory and the transition to more complex societies. Radiocarbon-dated remains from sites attributed to the culture provide the primary chronological framework used by scholars.
The core sites are located in Gansu province on the Loess Plateau, inland from China’s north-central plains.
