Cyme (Aeolis)
Archaeological Site Ancient Aeolian city ruins on Turkey's Aegean coast
Cyme (Kymê) on the Aegean coast of İzmir Province is an ancient Aeolian city whose scattered remains attract visitors interested in Hellenistic ruins, inscriptions and coastal archaeology.
Cyme (Aeolis) is an ancient Greek city of the Aeolian group located on the Aegean coast of what is now İzmir Province in Turkey. It was one of the classical Aeolian settlements on the western Anatolian littoral.
Remains on the site include traces of city fortifications and necropoleis that attest to an extended occupation across the Archaic, Classical and later Hellenistic and Roman periods. The ruins are modest on the ground and are of interest mainly to specialists and visitors tracing Aeolian Greek settlements.
The city was founded in the early historic period by Aeolian Greek settlers and subsequently passed through Persian, Hellenistic and Roman control as political power in the region changed. Over time its urban prominence declined and the site fell into ruin and agricultural reuse.
The archaeological remains lie near the modern coastline in the Aliağa district of İzmir Province, north of the city of İzmir on Turkey’s Aegean coast. The location sits within a coastal plain area with nearby modern towns and farmland.
- Visitor facilities: Ruins are limited and the site is not developed for large-scale tourism, so visitor facilities are minimal; local archaeological surveys have identified walls and burial areas.

Cyme’s remains are best reached by car from İzmir (approx. 1-2 hours depending on the chosen site and traffic); regional roads connect small towns along the Aegean coast. Combine with visits to nearby classical sites in the İzmir Province.
