Cwmhir Abbey is the ruined remains of a Cistercian monastery in mid-Wales, near the village of Abbeycwmhir in Powys. The site dates to the medieval period and represents one of the region’s surviving monastic ruins.
Remains on site are primarily stone foundations, low walls and earthworks of the former abbey church and associated buildings set in a rural valley. The site is small and visited for its archaeological interest rather than large standing structures. There are no major visitor facilities on site.
The abbey was established by Cistercian monks in the medieval era and functioned as a monastic community until the wider dissolution of monasteries in the 16th century. Over subsequent centuries the buildings fell into ruin and the stone was quarried for local use.
The ruins lie beside the village of Abbeycwmhir in Powys, mid-Wales, in a rural agricultural landscape.
