Čvrsnica
Mountains Dinaric Alps massif with limestone peaks and deep canyons
The Čvrsnica massif in Herzegovina presents limestone cliffs, high ridges and karst plateaus; climbers and hikers follow marked routes, use mountain huts and cross alpine meadows.
Čvrsnica is a limestone mountain massif in the Dinaric Alps of southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its highest point, Pločno, reaches 2,228 metres.
The massif offers extensive alpine terrain - cliffs, karst plateaus and glacial cirques - with hiking and mountaineering routes up to the summit. Many routes start from the adjacent Blidinje plateau, and the area is noted for high-altitude pastures and persistent snowfields at elevation.
Geologically it is part of the Dinaric karst chain, formed in Mesozoic limestones and shaped by karst and glacial processes. Local people have used the high pastures for seasonal grazing for centuries, and the area is managed today largely for conservation and outdoor recreation within Blidinje Nature Park.
The massif sits in Herzegovina roughly 30-40 kilometres northwest of Mostar, rising above the Blidinje plateau and bordered by deep valleys to the east and west. The landscape around it is a mix of karst highlands and forested slopes.
- Seasonal snow: Snowfields and cirques persist into summer at higher elevations, making late spring and early summer good for hiking with lingering snow contrasts.
- Access and terrain: Access is commonly from the Blidinje plateau or the town of Posušje; steep limestone faces require proper equipment on technical routes.
