The Cuvilliés Theatre is an ornate Rococo court theatre located within the Munich Residenz in central Munich, Bavaria. It was created for the Bavarian court by the architect and designer François de Cuvilliés in the mid-18th century.
The small auditorium is noted for carved wooden ornament, gilded box tiers and richly decorated stage framing typical of Rococo court theatres. Guided visits and occasional performances allow access to the intricately furnished auditorium and boxes.
Built in the mid-18th century for court entertainments, the theatre served the Bavarian ruling family and their guests. Much of the Residenz complex and the theatre interior were damaged in World War II; original carved elements that had been removed or stored were used during postwar reconstruction to restore the Rococo interior.
