Custer State Park is a large state park in the Black Hills of South Dakota, United States, established in the early 20th century and managed for recreation and wildlife conservation.

The park covers roughly 71,000 acres and is known for its free-roaming bison herd, scenic drives and granite formations. Popular activities include driving the Wildlife Loop, hiking, lake recreation at Sylvan Lake, fishing and climbing.

Originally set aside as a state park in 1912, development of the park’s roads and visitor facilities accelerated in the 1920s and 1930s with the involvement of state leaders who promoted tourism to the Black Hills. The park has been managed for both public recreation and wildlife stewardship since its founding.

It sits in the southern Black Hills near the town of Custer and is easily reached from other regional towns; the landscape is a mix of pine-covered hills, granite outcrops and grassy prairie.

  • Buffalo Roundup: An annual bison roundup takes place in late September when park staff and volunteers gather the herd for management and sale; the event draws large crowds.
  • Wildlife viewing: Early morning and late afternoon are best for wildlife viewing along the Wildlife Loop and on open grasslands.

What to See #

  • Sylvan Lake: A small natural lake with a developed day-use area, beach and boat launch that is a focal point for swimming, kayaking and rock-climbing access nearby.
  • Wildlife Loop Road: A scenic, signed loop drive about 18 miles long that passes through prime wildlife habitat and is a common route to spot bison, pronghorn and elk from the road.
  • Needles Highway: A narrow, engineered scenic highway known for granite spires and hairpin turns; the route includes short tunnels cut through rock.
  • Buffalo Corrals: A facility used during the park's annual bison management events and a viewing point during the Buffalo Roundup held each autumn.
