Curonian Spit National Park
National Park Narrow sand spit with shifting dunes and pine forests
The Curonian Spit stretches between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon, featuring tall sand dunes, fishing villages like Nida and migratory bird routes-popular for beaches, dune walks and birdwatching.
Curonian Spit National Park protects the Lithuanian portion of the Curonian Spit, a narrow sand peninsula on the Baltic coast that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the open sea. The spit is part of a UNESCO World Heritage property shared between Lithuania and the Kaliningrad Region of Russia.
The park contains high mobile dunes, pine forests, and small coastal settlements such as Nida and Juodkrantė that provide viewpoints, beaches and cultural attractions. Key viewpoints include dune ridges that offer panoramas over the lagoon and sea; the Parnidis Dune has a marked walkway and an observation area.
The Curonian Spit is a geomorphological feature formed by longshore drift and wind-driven dune accumulation over millennia, with fishing villages established along the sheltered lagoon side several centuries ago. The area has been managed for conservation since the 20th century and carries both natural and cultural protective designations.
The park occupies the Lithuanian section of the spit in Klaipėda County, north of the port city of Klaipėda, stretching along the Baltic coast and bordering the Curonian Lagoon.
- Spit length and protection: The Curonian Spit is a narrow sand peninsula about 98 km long that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea; the Lithuanian national park protects the Lithuanian portion of the spit.
- Dune heights: Sand dunes reach heights of up to around 50-60 metres in places, creating dramatic views over the lagoon and sea and making certain areas highly mobile and sensitive to erosion.
