Cumbres de Monterrey National Park is a protected area in Nuevo León, Mexico, that conserves rugged portions of the Sierra Madre Oriental near the city of Monterrey. The park is characterized by steep canyons, high peaks and montane forests.

Key attractions include deep limestone canyons with sheer rock faces popular among climbers, extensive hiking terrain through pine-oak forests and scenic viewpoints over the Monterrey basin. Recreational use is significant because of the park’s proximity to the Monterrey metropolitan area, making it a frequent destination for day trips and outdoor activities.

The area was set aside for conservation to protect the characteristic mountain landscapes, canyons and forest communities of the Sierra Madre Oriental and to provide managed outdoor recreation opportunities for the region. Conservation and visitor-management measures address the challenges of heavy recreational use near a large city.

The park occupies mountainous terrain on the flanks of Monterrey in northeastern Mexico, within Nuevo León state and accessible from the Monterrey metropolitan area.

How to Get to Cumbres de Monterrey National Park #

Most visitors approach from Monterrey. Drive west on Carretera Nacional (Federal Highway 85D or local routes) toward Santa Catarina and Fuentes del Valle; turnoffs to Chipinque and La Huasteca are well signposted. Public buses run to some fringe towns, but a car is the most practical way to reach trailheads.

  • Drive the Monterrey-Santiago highway (Carretera Nacional) early in the day to avoid traffic when heading to park trailheads.
