Culzean Castle is a clifftop castle and country house near Maybole in Ayrshire, Scotland, notable for its late 18th-century remodelling by architect Robert Adam. The building and extensive grounds are now managed by the National Trust for Scotland.
Visitors most often see the circular towered mansion with Adam-designed interiors and the surrounding parkland with woodland walks. The estate includes formal gardens, cliff-top paths and a historic coastal battery overlooking the Firth of Clyde.
The present appearance of the castle dates to Robert Adam’s work between the late 1770s and the 1790s for the Kennedy family; previous fortifications occupied the site in earlier centuries. In 1945 the estate was transferred to the National Trust for Scotland and has since been preserved as a public attraction.
Culzean sits on the Ayrshire coast, approximately 50 kilometres southwest of Glasgow by road, on cliffs above the Firth of Clyde with views toward Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran.
