Cueva del Guácharo National Park is a protected area in Monagas state, eastern Venezuela, established to conserve a large karst cave and the oilbird colonies that inhabit it. The cave and adjacent montane forests are key elements of the park’s conservation value.

The park’s main attraction is the cave itself, a multi-chamber karst system where thousands of oilbirds historically roost and nest; parts of the cave are open to guided visits. Outside the cave, trails pass through montane and cloud-forest habitats that support a range of regional birdlife and other species.

Protection was put in place to conserve the cave roosts and surrounding forests when the oilbird colonies and local biodiversity were recognized as requiring management. Since protection began, the site has been both a focus for scientific study and a regional tourist destination accessed via the nearby town of Caripe.

The park is located in the highlands of Monagas state in eastern Venezuela, with the town of Caripe as the usual gateway for visitors and researchers.

  • Signature species: The cave is named for the oilbird (guácharo), which nests in the dark chambers and is the park's principal conservation focus.
  • Access point: Nearest settlement is the town of Caripe, which serves as the usual gateway for visitors to the park and cave.

What to See #

  • The cave: The main show cave contains extensive internal chambers and galleries where oilbirds roost; parts of the cave are accessible to guided tours.
  • Surrounding habitats: Surrounding cloud-forest and highland habitats within the park provide refuge for many endemic and montane species and are included within the park boundaries.
