Alejandro de Humboldt National Park
Nature Reserve Biodiverse Cuban national park with endemic flora and fauna
A UNESCO park in eastern Cuba, Alejandro de Humboldt offers steep rainforest ridges, rivers and high endemism; travellers come for hiking, birdwatching and studying a concentrated diversity of plants and animals.
Alejandro de Humboldt National Park is a protected area in eastern Cuba, centred in Guantánamo Province and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. It is celebrated for exceptionally high biodiversity and many endemic species across montane and coastal ecosystems.
The park includes steep mountains, forested slopes, river valleys and coastal sectors that form a diversity of habitats within a relatively compact area. Visitors encounter dense subtropical forest, dramatic cliffs and a variety of flora and fauna found nowhere else in Cuba.
The area’s ecological importance has led to national protection and scientific study; its patterns of species distribution reflect complex geology and climate gradients. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining intact forest cover and protecting endemic species.
The park is located in eastern Cuba along the northeastern coastal zone of Guantánamo Province, incorporating both upland and adjacent lowland areas close to the island’s eastern extremity.
- High endemism: Named after the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and recognised for very high biodiversity and large numbers of endemic plant and animal species.
What to See #
- Montane forests: Steep, forested mountain slopes and ridges that harbour high levels of plant endemism and complex upland habitats.
- Coastal and riverine zones: Coastal lowlands and river valleys where distinct ecosystems meet the uplands, creating a mosaic of habitats.
How to Get to Alejandro de Humboldt National Park #
Alejandro de Humboldt National Park lies in Cuba’s eastern provinces and is reached by road from the nearest towns (notably Baracoa and Moa). There is no single regular long‑distance public transport directly into the park’s remote sectors; visitors commonly drive or take organised tours from Baracoa or Moa, and local guides are recommended for access into park trails and sensitive areas.
Tips for Visiting Alejandro de Humboldt National Park #
- Use Baracoa (and local guides based there) as your practical gateway to the park and plan excursions during the drier months (roughly November-April) when trails are more passable and endemic plants and animals are easier to spot.
- Hire a licensed local guide for inland trails - many of the park's best viewpoints, endemic flora spots and waterfalls are on rough tracks that are difficult to find without local knowledge.
- Avoid grouping your visit with the busiest coastal boat tours: inland and higher-elevation trails receive far fewer visitors, so an early start on weekday hikes increases your chance of quiet wildlife encounters and better photo light.
