Main image

Crowders Mountain State Park is a state park in western North Carolina that protects rugged ridges and two main summits on the Piedmont plain. The park is noted for its rocky outcrops, hiking trails and rock-climbing opportunities close to the Charlotte metropolitan area.

Primary attractions are the trails to the two summits - the rocky knob known as Crowders Mountain and the nearby ridgeline called The Pinnacle - both of which provide views over the surrounding lowlands and distant skyline on clear days. The park’s trail network links trailheads, picnic areas and climbing access points for day visitors.

The peaks were quarried and later protected as a state park; the area transitioned from private land and extractive uses to formal state protection to preserve the ridgelines and provide public recreation. The park is managed to balance conservation of the granite outcrops and native vegetation with active outdoor recreation.

Crowders Mountain State Park lies in Gaston County in southwestern North Carolina, west of the city of Charlotte and near the towns of Kings Mountain and Gastonia.

  • Hiking and climbing: The park contains steep, exposed rock faces used for technical and recreational rock climbing; trails to both main summits are well marked and popular for day hikes.

What to See #

  • Crowders Mountain: Crowders Mountain is the park's primary summit rising to a prominent rocky knob used by hikers and climbers for views across the Piedmont.
  • The Pinnacle: The Pinnacle is a separate ridge and lookout within the park that provides an alternate summit viewpoint and popular hiking trail access.
