Istria & Kvarner (Northern Adriatic)
May warms reliably, with sea breezes moderating heat along the waterfront and island harbors filling for the first time with visiting sailors. Hvar’s lavender is not at peak here (that comes later), but the coastline from Piran to Pula is green and fragrant; swimming starts to be comfortable at month’s end. Expect busy weekends as Croatians travel, so reserve accommodation for coastal towns and pack sunscreen and a light windbreaker for chilly evenings.
Central Dalmatian Coast & Islands (Split, Hvar, Brač, Vis)
May is a sweet spot: warm sunny days in the low to mid-twenties Celsius, calm seas, and island marinas filling with visiting yachts. Hvar’s lavender begins showing color in some fields late in the month, and ferry services are frequent - great for island-hopping. Travelers should expect busier weekends; bring swimwear, sunscreen, and a light jacket for after-sunset breezes.
Southern Dalmatia (Dubrovnik, Korčula, Pelješac, Mljet)
May shifts firmly into spring, with warmer days often in the high teens to low twenties Celsius and blossoming gardens around the old city. The sea becomes enticing and more island services resume; vineyards on Pelješac stir into the growing season. For travelers this is one of the best shoulder-season months - crowds are modest, photography is excellent, and packing should include swimwear along with a light jumper for night.
Dinaric Alps, Gorski Kotar & Lika (Mountains and Karst Interior)
May is noticeably milder in the karst interior: daytime temperatures are comfortable for hiking in places such as Risnjak or Velebit, and streams and waterfalls are at high flow after snowmelt. Mosquitoes may start near still water and trails can be soft, so bring insect repellent and durable footwear. For travelers, May is excellent for lower-elevation trekking and exploring the Plitvice labyrinth without summer crowds.
Continental Croatia (Zagreb, Slavonia, Northern Plains)
May is mild to warm with long daylight hours and comfortable conditions for river cruises on the Drava or cycling through Slavonia’s vineyards. Wildflowers are abundant and rural festivals begin to revive post-winter; this is an excellent month for agritourism. Pack versatile clothing - layers work well - and expect pleasant, mostly dry days with occasional showers.
