Crissa

Crissa (Krissa) was an ancient Greek city-state in central Greece, located on the coastal plain below the sanctuary at Delphi and associated historically with the port of Cirrha. It was an early regional centre in Phocis and played a role in the control of access to the inland religious sanctuary.

Archaeological traces include an acropolis and evidence of settlement and defensive works that reflect its role in the archaic period. The coastal outlet at Cirrha provided maritime access for pilgrims and trade to the inland sanctuary.

In the archaic and classical periods the city was involved in regional conflicts and political arrangements tied to the Amphictyonic League that centred on Delphi. Over time Crissa declined as Delphi and other centres altered the pattern of regional control and trade.

The site lies in Phocis in central Greece, on the coastal and lowland approaches to Delphi and the Gulf of Corinth, near the modern area around Kirra and the archaeological remains associated with ancient Delphi.
