Main image

Criccieth Castle is a 13th-century medieval fortress on a headland in the town of Criccieth on the north coast of Wales, overlooking Cardigan Bay. It is a prominent coastal ruin and a scheduled historic monument.

Initial fortification began in the early 13th century under native Welsh rulers and the castle was subsequently developed and modified during the late 13th-century campaigns of Edward I. It later fell into decline and was partially ruined by the late medieval period.

Sited in the coastal town of Criccieth on the Llyn Peninsula (Gwynedd), the castle occupies a headland above the town’s harbour and beach, a short walk from local amenities.

  • Sea views from the curtain wall: Clifftop curtain walls provide panoramic sea views over Cardigan Bay and the Llyn Peninsula; these vantage points are among the castle's best photo spots.
  • Visitor access: Managed by a national heritage body, the site is open seasonally and has modest visitor facilities; check local opening hours before travelling.

Criccieth Castle sits on a headland in the town of Criccieth on the Llŷn coast. Tips for Visiting Criccieth Castle #

  • Visit early in the morning or late afternoon outside school holiday weeks to avoid the busiest periods and to catch the best light for photographing the castle and the coastline.
  • Approach the ruins from Criccieth town centre-the short walk up from the High Street gives easier access than attempting the cliffside routes and puts you by the main entrance and interpretation panels.
  • Don't skip the walk along the southern curtain wall and earthworks; they offer the most dramatic panoramic views across Cardigan Bay toward Harlech and reveal defensive features missed by visitors who only see the gatehouse.
