Creux du Van
Cliff Natural limestone cirque offering dramatic cliffs and views
A limestone cirque in Neuchâtel canton defined by a high, rocky rim; hikers come for ridge walks, steep cliffs and panoramic views across the Jura and Lake Neuchâtel.
Creux du Van is a natural limestone cirque in the Swiss Jura noted for its horseshoe-shaped cliff amphitheater and prominent escarpments. It is a well-known regional landmark for geology, hiking and wildlife observation.
The site offers dramatic cliff faces and sweeping views across the cirque and surrounding valleys, with main viewpoints on the adjacent plateau providing easy access for photographers and hikers. The natural amphitheater is frequented by day visitors and walkers following marked paths around and down to the rim.
The cirque was formed primarily by glacial and periglacial erosion during the Quaternary and subsequent weathering of the limestone bedrock, producing the steep cliffs and bowl-shaped hollow visible today. Human use historically focused on alpine pasture and later recreational access.
Creux du Van sits in the Val de Travers within the Canton of Neuchâtel in western Switzerland, on the Jura range. The nearest settlements and trailheads are in the surrounding valley and visitors commonly reach the site from local villages and regional roads.
- Dimensions and formation: The natural amphitheater is a limestone cirque roughly 1,400 meters wide with cliffs about 160 meters high, formed by glacial erosion.
What to See #
- Le Soliat viewpoint: Le Soliat plateau and belvedere, the main viewpoint area offering close access to the cliff edge and panoramic vistas over the cirque.
- Trail network: Hiking routes and trails that approach the rim from the Val de Travers and provide access for day hikes and nature observation.
How to Get to Creux du Van #
Creux du Van is most commonly reached from the Val-de-Travers valley. Trains on the regional line serving Val-de-Travers stop at Noiraigue; from Noiraigue station follow the waymarked hiking trails up to the cirque (the walk from the village to the rim is a marked uphill hike). By car follow local roads into Val-de-Travers and park in Noiraigue or nearby trailhead parking areas.
Tips for Visiting Creux du Van #
- Approach from Noiraigue (there's a train stop) or from the Le Soliat car park - the trail from Noiraigue follows the Areuse Gorge and is a scenic, less steep route into the cirque compared with some other paths.
- Visit early morning or late afternoon for the best light on the limestone cliffs and far fewer day-hikers; midsummer weekends are the busiest times.
- Walk the full rim rather than stopping at the main viewpoint - the western/less-visited sections of the escarpment usually feel quieter and offer different panoramas and wildlife-watching opportunities.
- Combine the visit with the Gorges de l'Areuse hike starting at Noiraigue to make it a longer, continuous outing rather than a short, crowded stop.
Best Time to Visit Creux du Van #
Go between late spring and early autumn for the most reliable trail access and best views of the rocky cirque.
